One of the nice side effects this explosion of social media has been the reconnection of long lost “friends”.

Wondering what happened to your childhood buddies? Your first crush? That kid who moved away in 7th grade, never to be heard from again? The odds are they are probably out there on the internet. Your college roommate? That girl who you lost your virginity to? Your Sunday School teacher? They are all out there somewhere for the finding, all it takes is a little cyber stalking. I mean who hasn’t done it? Googled an ex? an old friend? A childhood crush? It’s easy and harmless. Most folks don’t even know how easy they are to find.

It’s pretty easy to find at least one person you wouldn’t mind reconnecting with on a social networking site. Facebook has become major facilitator in these impromptu virtual class reunions. ( A side note, Are there still people out there paying for classmates.com memberships? Has anyone even told the CEO of Classmates.com about Facebook yet?) It’s great finding someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time, playing catch up, hearing about their families and laughing over old memories of good times. It can be a little surreal even. The Before you know it, you find another classmate and another… So what happens next? Well you add them all as friends. And then they of course have a couple other folks from the old days that you can reconnect with. Sure you were the closest of friends with them. In fact that one guy stole you lunch money every day in 6th grade, and that other girl teased you mercilessly about your out of style hand-me-downs. But hey it’s been almost 20 years, we are all grown ups now, and they are a connection to your youth… the “good ol’ days”… so why not. Before you know it, you’re clicking “+1 add as Friend” to your entire graduating class. It’s great. Some folks have old pictures (Oh the haircuts, the clothes) others share stories that you may never have heard, or give you new perspective on events, totally changing how you remember your youth.

Then you start to see who they are now. Status updates, other connections, wall posts, “likes” all start to paint a picture and then you realize why you haven’t been in touch with some of these folks.

Some of them are completely different people than when you knew them (or maybe you’re the one that has changed).

The class clown has become a politician.

The class slut is now a Jesus Freak.

The biggest jerk you knew is a great parent.

Oddly enough the nerds are still nerds… but now it’s cool to be a nerd. Or maybe it’s just nerdy things have become cool.

In the end, you discover one thing. Life really hasn’t changed that much since high school.

I like to think I live a purpose driven, exciting life.

I live in the most vibrant, creative, unpredictable city in the world. A city where people from over 180 countries have come together in a spirit of commerce, art, and discovery.

I like to think that I may find anything around the next corner. That there is a veritable cornucopia of earthly delights to be discovered out there. New people to meet, new foods to eat, new experiences to try.

So why do I never go around those new corners?

I like new. New is good. Everyday I could do something I never did before. All I have to do is turn a corner that I hadn’t before…

Who knows where turning left instead of right might lead me? Is it possible that the world itself could turn on my choices? After all any choice I make could effect countless others I might encounter along the way. All my mundane daily decisions have unseen and un-thought of consequences. Because any decision I make could change a decision someone else might make. One more person ahead of you in a line may make you decide to go somewhere else, or simply delay your arrival thereby effecting the outcome of every person you may have encountered along the way. The delay could cause you to miss your bus, making you wait for the next one, preventing you from being on the first bus when an accident happens. The butterfly effect of small choices rippling out touching everyone around it.

Suddenly any choice seems monumental.

What job should I take?

Where do I live?

Should I have Chinese takeout or Mexican for dinner?

Should I turn left or right?

Wow that puts a lot of pressure on your choices doesn’t it?

Maybe that’s why we all settle into patterns. So we know what will happen, we are not surprised. But even that is a choice.

Hey there.

So I set this blog up as way to reach out and discuss the writing process with others. And then promptly never wrote anything here.

That does not mean I have not been writing!

I currently have three projects I am working on.

1 – I was approached by a producer to write a segment for a new musical stage revue featuring 1940′s music. They liked what I wrote so much, that they asked me to look over their whole script.

2- A Procedural Spec Script. Which one? Does it matter? It does seem you can write one story, then tailor it to the needs of the specific show. Just need the crime, the gimmick, and the piece that reveals how it was done.

3- My original pilot. I am working on my own story. A high concept serial family drama. The hook? It takes place in different periods, with scenes in the 80′s, 90′s and present. I figured the haircuts alone will be buzz worthy.

So those three projects are my writing focus right now. Plus my other blogs.

The one that might be most interesting to you is Geeky in the City. (Because, you see, I am a geek, and I live in the City) It’s a bit of a slice of life, a bit of romance, a bit a geeky stuff.

I write both prose, and plays (Stage, Screen). I write a bit of commentary, especially focusing on the aforementioned geeky things – Comics, Sci-Fi and other “geeky” TV and Film, Nerdcore music, etc. You can see that at Exile in Geeksville.

I will be back here more, especially as my writing progresses. I would love to find more writers to discuss things like:

Agents

Reading/Workshops

Producers

Self Publishing

Writer’s Block

Favorite writers/writing blogs

So please leave comments and start the discussion.

I guess it’s odd to start a blog about writing by writing about writers’ block, but that is what I’m doing.

Living in NYC, there is always so much do. Places to go etc etc.

Somedays it’s just so easy to go and be a part of a living breathing world instead of a word processor.

So I’m our running errands downtown. I need new shoes, and the remote on my iPhone headphones is not working, so right now I am waiting at the genius bar at the 14th Street Apple store.

What do you do when you can’t write.
